In addition to our current team, Kate has supervised numerous postdocs, research assistants, postgraduate students and undergraduate research interns.

Kate is also an Associate Supervisor to postgraduate students at The University of Queensland.

 

Postdoctoral Researchers

  • Dr Amy Chan, Postdoctoral Researcher 2020-2022
    Amy joined the Inflammasome Lab in 2016 as a PhD student and after graduating, continued her research in the lab as Postdoctoral Researcher.
     
  • Dr Rebecca Coll, Research Officer 2014 - April 2019
    Rebecca moved from the Inflammasome Lab to Queen's University, Belfast, in the United Kingdom. Rebecca is leading her own research group as a Lecturer at the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.
     
  • Dr David Boucher, Postdoctoral Researcher 2014-2018
    Dave joined the Inflammasome Lab as a Postdoctoral Researcher in 2014. In 2018, Dave moved to Switzerland, and has reconnected with Kaiwen as part of Petr Broz's Laboratory at the University of Lausanne, where the inflammasome was born. In 2020, Dave started his own lab at York University, UK.
     
  • Dr Kaiwen Chen, Postdoctoral Researcher 2015-2017
    Following his PhD, Kaiwen stayed on as Postdoctoral Researcher in the Inflammasome Lab until 2017. Kaiwen then moved to Switzerland to work in Petr Broz's Laboratory at the University of Lausanne, the birthplace of the inflammasome. In early 2021 he started his new lab at the National University of Singapore.
     
  • Dr Jelena Bezbradica Mirkovic, Research Officer 2014 - April 2016
    Jelena moved from the Inflammasome Lab to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, to lead her own research group as a Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research (KTRR) Senior Research Fellow.

  • Dr Amanda Stanley, Postdoctoral Researcher Jan 2014 - Dec 2015
    Amanda moved from the Inflammasome Lab to the Flow Cytometry and Imaging Facility at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Brisbane.
     
  • Dr Leonhard Heinz, Postdoctoral Researcher 2011
    Leo moved from the Inflammasome Lab back to his hometown of Vienna to join the Superti-Furga laboratory. Leo has now opened his own laboratory, as Principal Investigator at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.

 

Research Assistants and Administrators

  • Madhavi Maddugoda, Scientific Communicator Jan 2019 - Sep 2021
    Madi has moved into a new role as Strategic Advisor for Research Training at IMB, the University of Queensland.
     
  • Grace Lawrence, Research Assistant Jan 2019 - Mar 2020
    After more than a year as a Research Assistant to the Inflammasome Lab, Grace has now started her PhD in the Inflammasome Lab, in collaboration with the Sweet Group at IMB, the University of Queensland.
     
  • Jessica Von Pein, Research Assistant 2018
    Following a year as a Research Assistant to the Inflammasome Lab, Jess has moved next door to conduct her PhD in the Sweet Group at IMB, the University of Queensland.
     
  • Jennifer Dou, Research Assistant Nov 2015 - Nov 2017
    Jennifer (Cookie) Dou decided to take the plunge and indulge in her other (non-scientific) passion in life – design and animation! She is currently honing her craft at design school.

 

Completed PhD students

  • Caroline Holley, PhD awarded 2021
    Caroline Holley completed her PhD in the Inflammasome Lab in April 2021 and is continuing her research with us as a Postdoctoral Researcher at IMB, The University of Queensland.
     
  • Amy Chan, PhD awarded 2020
    Amy Chan completed her PhD in the Inflammasome Lab in April 2020 and is continuing her research with us as a Postdoctoral Researcher at IMB, The University of Queensland.
     
  • Damien Bierschenk, PhD awarded 2018
    Damien Bierschenk completed his PhD in the Inflammasome Lab and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher at Dr Hans Blom’s lab at KTH, in Sweden.
     
  • Alina Zamoshnikova, PhD awarded 2016
    Alina moved from the Inflammasome Lab to a Postdoctoral Researcher position at the UQ Diamantina Institute with Dr Antje Blumenthal.
     
  • Kaiwen Chen, PhD awarded 2015
    Kaiwen stayed on as Postdoctoral Researcher in the Inflammasome Lab until 2017. Kaiwen recently moved to Switzerland to work in Petr Broz's Laboratory at the University of Lausanne, the birthplace of the inflammasome!

 

Completed Honours students

  • Jared Coombs, 1st Class Honours awarded 2021
    Jared stayed on as a Research Assistant in the Inflammasome Lab.
     
  • Caroline Holley, 1st Class Honours awarded 2014
    Caroline stayed on as a Research Assistant and in 2016 she began her PhD in the Inflammasome Lab.
     
  • Connie Ross, 1st Class Honours awarded 2017
    Connie returned to the Inflammasome lab in 2016 as an Honours student, for completion mid-2017. She then worked in the Inflammasome Lab for 6 months as a Research Assistant before starting her PhD in the Gillam Lab at UQ.

 

Undergraduate Research Interns

  • Jared Coombs, Undergraduate UQ research project 2019
    We then welcomed Jared back to the Inflammasome Lab in 2021, for his Honours research year.
     
  • Raushan Lala, Summer UQ Intern 2017
    Raushan is now completing his medical degree at UQ.
     
  • Connie Ross, Summer UQ Intern 2013, Winter UQ Intern 2015
    Connie returned to the Inflammasome lab in 2016 as an Honours student. 
     
  • Kevin Zhu, Undergraduate UQ research project 2015
     
  • Verena Rolfes, International Intern 2014
    Verena moved from the Inflammasome Lab to Bonn, Germany to undertake a PhD in laboratory of Eicke Latz, Director of the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University of Bonn, Germany.
